Learning Depth and Distance

On Wednesday 13th we were Learning Depth and Distance with Carol Owen.

It was a fun and interesting dem and Carol taught us many tricks and hints to remember. She worked with oil paint so the hall filled with the scent of Turps – took me right back to my student days!

First she painted a quick landscape breaking all the ‘rules’. She encouraged us to spot and discuss her deliberate mistakes.

Then she painted another landscape showing how the traditional rules can help the artist get a good sense of depth and distance.

Actually, I liked both pictures for different reasons and Carol was keen to point out that often rules are broken to great effect!

Thank you Carol for entertaining us and teaching us essential tips at the same time.

Here are the two paintings in progress…

Our next talk will be by Christie Bird on Keeping a Sketch Book – bring yours along with you to make notes! You can find out more on our events page.
